Shiva Ganesh Nannari Syrup
Nannari syrup puts the traditional nannari flavour within reach of your own glass. Because it is concentrated, a small amount mixed with chilled water gives you a full serving of nannari drink — no root preparation, no straining, no waiting.
It is also the flexible option. The same syrup that makes a simple nannari drink can be blended into a nannari lassi, layered into a falooda-style drink, or combined with fruit juice for a chilled mocktail.
What Is Nannari Syrup?
Nannari syrup is a concentrated preparation of the nannari flavour, designed to be diluted before drinking. Nannari itself comes from the root of Hemidesmus indicus, the plant also known as Indian sarsaparilla, and the syrup simply concentrates that traditional flavour so it can be used without preparing the root.
Used as intended, a little goes a long way, and because you control the dilution, you decide how strong and how sweet each glass is. The taste is the same one you would recognise in a traditional nannari sarbath — earthy, botanical, gently sweet — but without the preparation time.
Our nannari guide explains where that flavour comes from, and our nannari soda is the ready-to-drink alternative if you would rather not mix anything.
Nannari Syrup With Chilled Water
The simplest way to use nannari syrup is with chilled water, and it is the closest match to a traditional glass of nannari. Start by pouring chilled water into a glass, add syrup a little at a time, and stir and taste as you go until the strength and sweetness are right for you.
Start lighter than you think you need. Nannari is not a very sweet flavour to begin with, so a syrup that seems restrained in the bottle can taste strong once it is diluted. Add it gradually and you will land on the right point far more easily.
Finish the glass with ice, and add a squeeze of lime or lemon if you want a sharper edge. Very cold water is what keeps the drink tasting like nannari rather than like a sweet cordial.
Nannari Syrup With Soda
Mixing nannari syrup with soda water instead of still water gives you a home-made version of the carbonated format. The result is closer in feel to nannari soda: the same earthy nannari flavour, lifted by carbonation rather than dulled by it.
Because the syrup is concentrated, it mixes with soda water without losing its character. Use a tall glass, add syrup first, top with chilled soda water, and stir once gently so the foam settles.
This is also the easiest way to serve nannari to a group without preparing several glasses. A pitcher of syrup-and-soda-water, kept cold, pours and satisfies on its own — and it can be adjusted per person as you pour.
Making Nannari Sarbath and Other Drinks
Start with water
Fill a glass with chilled water. The colder the water, the closer the result is to a traditional nannari drink.
Add syrup to taste
Add the syrup a little at a time, stirring and tasting, until the strength and sweetness suit you.
Finish and serve
Add ice, stir once more, and finish with a squeeze of lime or lemon if you want a sharper note.
How Nannari Syrup Is Used
Nannari Sarbath
The classic use. Dilute the syrup with chilled water, sweeten to taste, and serve over ice with lime — the traditional South Indian nannari drink, made at home. Read the full guide.
Nannari Lassi
Blend the syrup with yogurt and ice for a creamy drink. The syrup carries the nannari flavour into a format closer to a traditional lassi.
Falooda-style Drink
Layer the syrup with vermicelli, soaked basil seeds, chilled milk and ice. The nannari flavour works well as one layer among several.
Nannari Mocktail
Combine the syrup with fruit juice, soda water and a sprig of mint over ice for a fizzy, longer nannari drink.
